The Wardens' Report

Transform’s Neighbourhood Wardens are the “Feet on the Street” whose aim is to improve the quality of life for residents in Ilfracombe, Combe Martin and Bratton Fleming. Their work will reflect the needs of each community but their main tasks will be to work with young people, look out for vulnerable people, bring old and young together, and be a point of contact between residents and agencies to help sort out any problems in the neighbourhood.

Who are the wardens and how can they help me?

Helen Frisby and Andrew Kellaway are the Neighbourhood Wardens for Ilfracombe, Combe Martin and Bratton Fleming.

Their posts are being paid for by Transform for the first three years, and the Local Strategic Partnership (which includes District and County Councils, plus service agencies such as the police, Health Authority etc) has agreed to find funding after that.

The Wardens are not part of any council (town, parish, district or county) but they do work with council staff to resolve issues in the three areas – they have already tackled overflowing bins, drains, graffiti, cracked paving stones and broken bollards.

The wardens can:

  • Report problems that residents are experiencing directly to the service providers, so that they can be sorted out;
  • Put residents in touch with service providers;
  • Attend Residents’ groups and community events;
  • Identify services that need to be improved or created;
  • Work with young people, developing new services and promoting understanding of the issues facing young people;
  • Support old and vulnerable people, helping them to access services;
  • Facilitate environmental improvements to help keep the area clean and tidy;
  • Work to increase community confidence and security, and reduce the fear of crime.
