12.9.2007 Victoria Road residents make life better for themselves.
Victoria Road in Ilfracombe became a hive of activity on Wednesday September 12th thanks to a Community Action Day organised by Helen Frisby, Transform Neighbourhood Warden and Transform Street Representative Kim Fuller. Residents were at the centre of the action, working with Transform Neighbourhood Management and local agencies to tidy up their neighbourhood.
The day was a huge success thanks to the co-operation of all residents who kindly cleared the road of vehicles enabling Devon County Council Highways and Greensweep to clean the silted drains and sweep the road.
Local residents armed with brooms and black bags helped staff from the council agencies to clean up the street. Police and crime prevention officers went door to door offering home security advice and protective marking of personal items. Healthier Homes were also on hand to offer advice on saving energy and reducing fuel costs.
Neighbourhood Watch co-coordinator, Mandy, said “it was fantastic to see all the residents coming out to support each other, today we have had issues dealt with that would not have been without the help and support of all the agencies involved.”.
Helen Frisby said “Victoria Road is a perfect example of a traditional community, the Street Rep Scheme enables the residents to be empowered and this action day has shown what amazing results can be achieved when residents and agencies work together”.
The activity day continued with residents and staff from Transform helping to tidy the gardens and pathways leading down to the community seating area at the bottom of Victoria Road used by many residents and tourists.
A feedback session with refreshments was held at the Christian Fellowship Church Hall to evaluate the day’s events and offer residents the chance to relax after their hard work.
You too could have this happen in your area, if you are interested in the Street Rep Scheme please contact Helen Frisby at Transform on 01271 867131.
